Edmond Public Schools is releasing its findings from a community engagement survey conducted in November. More than 4,700 people answered the 17-question survey which focused on the entire district rather than a single school.
Topics covered in the survey included school safety, communication and district strengths and priorities.
“We sincerely appreciate those stakeholders who took the time to answer the survey questions. Their honest feedback will guide us as we work to make improvements,” said Superintendent Bret Towne.
Key findings of the survey include the following:
A majority of respondents (91 percent) believe that Edmond Public Schools is important to the success of the community.
A majority of respondents (88 percent) were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the district.
Nearly 83 percent of respondents “agree” or “strongly” agree that school staff are welcoming and responsive to questions and concerns.
When asked about the district’s greatest strengths, respondents selected “teaching staff,” “high expectations” and “community support.”
On the subject of school safety, nearly 84 percent of respondents reported that their child felt safe at school with 80 percent reporting that their child feels valued and treated with respect at school. The top three safety concerns were bullying, guns and weapons, and alcohol and substance abuse.
“We know that bullying can negatively impact students’ ability to learn so we are taking an in-depth look at our bullying prevention programs to determine what we can change or improve in order to stop bullying before it starts,” said Superintendent Bret Towne. “At a recent professional development conference district staff gained significant insight about simple but effective bullying prevention programs that we will be rolling out in the next few months,” he continued.
Another noteworthy survey response according to Towne is that when asked, “If you were the Superintendent, how would you prioritize time and resources,” the majority of respondents chose the option, “Increase salaries to recruit and retain quality teachers.”
“Public support is on the side of teachers in this issue; all legislators need to catch up to the public sentiment,” Towne stressed.
